More than one thousand Chinese participated into an environmental protection campaign sponsored by the British Embassy in Beijing and Beijing Youth Daily and three of them won the opportunity to travel to UK to witness how “green life” is like there.

The campaign, called Act different and make the world better, proposed 10 “green lifestyles”, such as quitting the habit of using plastic bags or one-off products, turning off electric appliances when they are not in operation, building a beautiful balcony, buying things with less carbon emission, etc. Those who joined the campaign were encouraged to find more ways to live a more environmental-friendly life.

Some 100,000 people viewed blogs of those participants and 20,000 voted. Competitors included members of non-governmental organizations for environmental protection and the public who had no experience of environmental protection.

Mr. Xia Yu, a famous young movie star, acted as the first volunteer and image representative of the event. He visited a family and told them how to save energy and resources in daily life. He said at the ceremony that he himself had learned a lot about the “green life” and would practice the knowledge in his own life.

Wang Tao, one of the three winners, is leading an NGO of environmental protection. He has organized many activities to promote the idea of protecting the environment among the public by making small differences, such as stopping spitting.

Ms. Feng Yunping, another winner who has received the invitation for a trip to UK, showed how she saved water in her life. And Mr. Yan Fusheng, also a winner, declared his plan of launching a program to improve the public awareness of contributing to the environmental protection in the daily life.

Mrs. Barbara Janet Woodward, Minister of British Embassy in Beijing, and Mr. Zhang Yanping, president of Beijing Youth Daily attended the awarding ceremony.
