Artificial precipitation operations added 6.7 billion cubic meters of water at the source of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers, improving local ecology and environment, local meteorological authorities said.

A total of 22 artificial precipitation operations were carried out at the Sanjiangyuan (the source of the three rivers) area in China's northwestern Qinghai Province between May and August 2007,the Qinghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The operations brought a rainfall increase of seven to 30 percent during the period compared with the average over the past three decades, the bureau said.

The Sanjiangyuan area began artificial precipitations in 2005 in an effort to curb the deterioration of the environment due to global warming and human activities.

The artificial rainfall operations in the past three years had "contributed to the improvement of the ecology and environment" in the area, the bureau said.

An artificial rainfall project comprised of the monitoring, operation and assessment systems will be completed in June 2008, according to the bureau. It cost about 160 million yuan (21.6 million U.S. dollars).

The project could make the artificial rainfall volume reach eight billion cubic meters, the bureau said.
