A roads official in Lufeng, Guangdong Province, was removed from his Communist Party post and had his administrative position downgraded after organizing a high-profile funeral for his mother.
The Party discipline inspection commission of Guangdong issued an official circular last week claiming Xie Pingfa, director of Lufeng's highway administration, had violated Party rules on self-discipline and integrity for officials and cadres.
The commission decided to remove all his posts in the Party and downgrade his administrative post in the government, the circular said. Xie will no longer work for the highway administration, it said.
Xie and his siblings staged a luxury funeral on November 17 for their mother who passed away in October.
They erected a stage more than 20 m high in front of a temple in their hometown of Jiazi for people to pay their tributes.
The family also employed a 20-member band to perform music at the event.
More than 1,000 people, including eight officials and staff members of the highway administration, attended the ceremony, the joint working team of local Party discipline agents found during their investigations.
Xie and his siblings also hosted a banquet for more than 100 tables, the team found.
According to a report by the Guangzhou-based Nanfang Daily, Xie also accepted gifts of money from guests.
"Xie Pingfa's move violates the rules of self-discipline and integrity for officials and cadres, and has negatively affected the community. What's more, he did not report it to the local or higher-level discipline agents or supervision agents in line with the guideline," the circular said.
"The incident reflected that some of our officials are indifferent to the discipline and turn a deaf ear to Party regulations and discipline."
The commission called on Party members, especially officials and cadres, to learn a lesson from Xie's case.
