Railway authorities here are promising safe travel during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday season, an official has said.
Police will be on alert for ticket scalping at all sales offices as well as illegal sales over the Internet, Wu Qiang, director of the Shanghai railway bureau, said on Monday.
Any ticket office found to have illegally sold tickets will have its operations suspended, he said.
The bureau, which is in charge of all railway transport in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, is gearing up to handle an estimated 26 million passengers over chun yun, the 40-day travel rush that occurs every Chinese New Year.
Some 1.17 million people are expected to leave Shanghai by bus during the period.
Shanghai's railway stations are expected to handle 6 million passengers, up 1.01 million on last year; Zhejiang will hanlde 7.22 million; Jiangsu, 6.93 million; and Anhui, 6.7 million, all of which are up on last year's figures, Wu said.
An additional 385 ticket offices are to be opened, bringing the total to 1,794, 445 of which will be in Shanghai.
More trains will be put into operation during the period, Wu said.
Express services will operate out of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou and Yiwu, all of which have large migrant populations.
Wu advised people to avoid traveling on February 3 and 4, when large numbers of migrant workers are expected to go to Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan and Hubei provinces.
