Transport networks in Beijing will have a record crush of travelers during this year's 40-day Chunyun, or transport for the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year) period, according to local officials.

Beijing could have 30.09 million passengers in the coming Chunyun, up 7 percent up from last year's. Trains would carry about 21.03 million people, up 6 percent, and the number of people using the Capital Airport would surge 10 percent to 6.1 million. Long-distance coaches would carry 2.96 million people, 4.9 percent more than last year.

The Beijing Railway Bureau planned to add 89 temporary round-trips to its schedule, including 36 bullet train round-trips.

The Capital Airport said it would try to keep daily aircraft movements below 1,000 by using larger planes and adjusting schedules.

As for buses, 1,206 more coaches would be added to the current 4,089 that travel through Beijing each day.

In the business hub of Shanghai, the peak of this large-scale annual migration is expected to fall on Feb. 3-4, when 190,000 people would flood into the two railway stations in the eastern municipality a day.

Shanghai planned to add 62 temporary round-trip passenger trains, most of which would serve Beijing, Anhui, Jiangxi and Sichuan.

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway would have its second tough test: JiaNailin, vice head of the Lhasa Railway Station, estimated that the station would send off around 100,000 passengers during Chunyun, up 9.8 percent.
