UN envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari praised China's efforts on the Myanmar issue yesterday in Beijing, saying the country has played a "constructive" role.

"First, on some technical issues, the Chinese government has been helpful," Gambari said at a press conference at the UN compound in Beijing.

The UN mediator also said that "as a member of a group of friends of the Secretary-General on Myanmar", China has been "playing a constructive role and making valuable suggestions".

Gambari said his discussions with the Chinese officials during the two-day visit were very frank, "not in the diplomatic sense of frank, but generally open discussion, constructive discussion".

The envoy has met Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other high-level diplomatic officials for consultations on the situation in Myanmar.

During the meeting, Yang said China supports the efforts made by Myanmar's government in pushing forward the country's domestic political process, maintaining stability and improving living conditions of the people.

He also noted that when providing constructive help to Myanmar, the international community should adhere to objectivity, fairness and balance, be patient and confident and do more to improve mutual trust among the parties involved in Myanmar through dialogue.

Beijing was the first stop on Gambari's tour of Asian capitals in seeking a solution to Myanmar's political problem. He will later visit Indonesia, Singapore and Japan.

Zhai Kun, a senior scholar with the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said Gambari's choice of Beijing as the first stop showed he valued China's role in the Myanmar issue.

"It is hard to make strategic changes on the status quo in Myanmar. China has offered all possible technical help," said Zhai.
