The World Harmony Foundation (WHF),a non-profit organization dedicated to building the culture of peace and a sustainable environment for all people, ordered 60 "Harmony Bells" from a Chinese company on Thursday.
The design has elements of the Earth and nature on the bell, with the word "Harmony" inscribed around the center of the bell in the six official languages of the United Nations in alphabetical order, WHF president Frank Liu told the 2008 International Tourism and World Harmony Forum.
The 600 kilogram bells are 4 feet high with pigeons, trees, clouds and an image of the globe carved on them, he said. The bells will be produced by Nanjing Jingling Ancient Art Bronze Institute, a master bell maker.
The Chinese government presented a "World Harmony Bell" molded by the institute to the United Nations headquarters on its 60th anniversary ceremony in 2005.
"Since it was first officially rung by the then UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, the harmony bell traveled globally as an ambassador of peace. We will give the 60 bells to countries in dire need of peace," said Liu. The WHF is recruiting volunteers to travel with the bells to promote peace all across the world, he said.
Established in July 2004 in New York, the WHF aims to promote the ideals and principles of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
