Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), joined the Taiwan delegation of deputies to the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) on Friday afternoon to deliberate Premier Wen Jiabao's government work report.

Jia said the mainland side will deepen reciprocal exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan, be united with the broadest masses of Taiwan compatriots, resolutely oppose to and check secessionist activities by "Taiwan independence" forces, strive to maintain stability in the cross-Straits region and safeguard the fundamental interests of Chinese people on both sides of the Strait.

President Hu Jintao's recent speech on Taiwan is of vital guidance, said Jia. "It's an important statement on developing ties with Taiwan, proceeding from the strategic high of the fundamental interests of the entire Chinese nation."

Hu, addressing political advisors attending the CPPCC National Committee session on Tuesday, pledged the mainland will make utmost efforts to do a good job in anything that is good to the Taiwan compatriots and conducive to safeguarding peace in the cross-Straits region and promoting the peaceful reunification of the motherland.

The president also noted that secessionist activities in Taiwan have become the greatest menace to China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and such activities are doomed to fail.
