March 12 is National Tree Planting Day. The Information Office of the State Forestry Administration announced today that, on the occasion of the 30th National Tree Planting Day, a new upsurge in forestation and greening has taken off nationwide.
Data show that in 2007, 500 million people in China had participated in voluntary tree planting; and 2.27 billion trees have been planted. The civic voluntary tree-planting dedication rate reached 58 percent, up 3 percentage points over the previous year. The green coverage rate in China's cities reached 35.11 percent. As a result, since National Tree Planting Day was established in 1979, 10.98 billion people-times in China have voluntarily planted 51.54 billion trees.
