A senior Chinese military leader has urged stronger ties between the army and the people in quake-relief work during his three-day visit to Gansu Province.

Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Military Commission, also stressed the importance of the ideological and political education of the army, which is "critical for boosting the morale of the army and ensuring the success of the quake-relief work."

During his trip, Xu visited earthquake survivors, heard reports on the progress of relief work and spent time with the military forces.

The army should make an all-out effort to save the injured, help rebuild the lives of the survivors and support preventive measures against earthquake-induced disasters, according to Xu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

He praised the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and armed police, saying they had turned in an outstanding performance and won people's trust since the magnitude 8.0 earthquake rocked southwest China on May 12.

The quake, the worst in decades, has so far claimed more than 60,000 lives and led to billions of yuan in losses in Sichuan and neighboring areas.
