State Councilor Liu Yandong visited the national ancient books exhibition on Saturday, the country's third "Cultural Heritage Day".
The exhibits include about 400 of the most valued original written works, such as the classical Chinese historical records "Zizhi Tongjian", known as History as a Mirror, compiled by many ancient Chinese scholars led by the Chinese politician Sima Guang (1019-1086) in the Song Dynasty.
Liu said that the ancient works "played a very important part in the country's history over thousands of years. They reflect Chinese people's capacity for imagination, creation and thinking."
Liu added that the works were "priceless treasures that belong to people all over the world in terms of the civilization process of human beings."
In March, the country published the first catalog of 2,392 national rare ancient books. The items in the current exhibition were selected from the catalog.
Liu stressed that it was vital to protect China's cultural heritage to promote Chinese culture and an important cultural foundation for safeguarding national unity and social stability, and a requirement for building a harmonious society.
Liu urged relevant organizations at all levels to protect and salvage ancient works through science, adding that they should invest more to improve the techniques and equipment for heritage protection.
The exhibition, launched by the Ministry of Culture, also shows the country's achievements in protecting ancient books since the founding of the New China in 1949.
The exhibition runs through July 20. Source: Xinhua
