Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that the causes for soaring food prices are multi-faceted and complex, urging the international community to increase cooperation and take comprehensive measures to maintain world food security.
Hu made the remarks at a meeting of leaders of five developing countries on the eve of an outreach session of the Group of Eight (G8) summit.
Being all major grain producers and consumers, "we should jointly encourage the international community to act more actively to ensure food security," said President Hu in the presence of leaders of India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico.
Calling on concerted efforts to support and facilitate the Task Force on Global Food Security Crisis to work out an international cooperation framework on food security, the Chinese president said that the five nations also need to "increase coordination and carry out technological exchanges and cooperation in such practical areas as planting, disease and pest prevention and grain reserves."
Hu dismissed the argument stressing the so-called "responsibility of big developing countries," which blames the development of big developing countries for hikes in world food prices.
There are in fact multi-faceted and complex factors behind the price hikes, said Hu.
"Developing countries suffer most from rising food prices and we the five countries have also been affected to varying degrees," he said.
Hu also expressed China's readiness to share experience in agricultural development with other developing countries and provide help as its capacity allows so as to raise the integrated agricultural production capacity of developing countries.
The Chinese president arrived here late Monday for the outreach session of the Group of Eight (G8) summit scheduled for Wednesday in the northern Japanese resort of Toyako.
