China's environmental NGOs have developed rapidly during the last several years. In total, there are already 3,539 environmental NGOs in the country (including China's Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan Province), involving about 300,000 people, according to the information from the 2008 Annual Conference on China's Environmental NGOs Sustainable Development.
According to the 2008 Report on Development of China's Environmental NGOs released by the All-China Environment Federation, by October 2008, China already had 1,309 government-sponsored environmental NGOs, 1,382 school environment societies, 508 grassroot-level environment NGOs, 90 branches of international environment organizations, and nearly 250 environmental NGOs in China's Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan Province.
