Guangzhou Port's throughput of containers has broken through 10 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). It becomes the third container port in China that has broken the 10-million TEUs after the Shanghai Port and the Shenzhen Port, and ranking it among the top ten container ports in the world.
The Guangzhou Port started container service in 1978, and it was one of the first ports to operate container transport business in China.
At present, the Guangzhou Port has nineteen 10,000 tonnage container berths, including ten 100,000 tonnage container berths in the first and second phases of Nansha Terminal. The whole port has opened a total of over 100 ship routes of foreign and domestic trade to such destinations as Europe, North America, Australia and Southeast Asia.
