During the press conference held for the research on December 1, Ye Jingzhong, deputy director of the College of Humanities and Social Development of China Agricultural University, said the survey found that the women left behind articulated the existence of sexual repression issues. "They suffer from prolonged sexual repression, which leads to a chain of negative emotions," Ye said. The survey shows that 69.8% of women left behind often feel irritable, 50.6% often feel anxious and 39.0% often feel depressed.

With regards to the elderly who are left behind, Ye explained, 49.1% are in "poor" or "very poor" health and illness is their biggest anxiety. In the event of illness, the elderly face financial hardship, and are lacking people who can look after them.
