China's first reading center catering to foreigners, an international library in Shanghai Hongqiao named "China Window," opened on December 6.
The library is jointly sponsored by the State Council Information Office and the Shanghai Municipal Government.
It exhibits the central and local governments' promotional materials, providing comprehensive information for foreigners to learn more about Shanghai and China. At the same time, it provides foreigners a one-stop digital book search system as well as borrowing and purchasing services. The library also provides information in various areas including the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, China's foreign affairs, travel, culture, sports, medicine and health, education and transportation.
International groups cooperating with the library, such as the National Library of Korea and the National Library of Russia, have donated a large amount of original-edition books to the new library.
