Tap water, that has been available to urban residents, is now available to all of the residents of the 260 households of Shangzhongyuan Village, Hanchunhe Town, Fangshan District of Beijing.
A villager Guo Xiuhong said that, "Now we just need to turn on the tap in our own kitchen to get water for cooking. In the past, to get drinking water, we had to carry water from the well at the west end of the village, which is hundreds of meters away."
The change was brought about by the safe drinking water in rural areas project carried out in Beijing. From 2005 to 2008, the investment made by the Beijing municipal government alone has amounted to 2 billion yuan, solving drinking water access difficulties for a total of 1.99 million rural residents. The target set out in the 11th Five-Year Plan has been realized two years ahead of schedule.
