Shanghai will formally announce and enact the "Standards for English translations of Chinese names in public places in Shanghai." This will provide criteria for English translations in public places according to the information from the recently held 2009 plenary meeting of the Shanghai Municipal Language Committee.

The "Standards for English translations of Chinese names in public places in Shanghai" currently under formulation involves 12 sectors and fields, including the Party and government organizations, social groups, sports and cultural venues, the Shanghai World Expo venues, health and medical care, transportation, business, tourism, postal and telecom services, and finance.
