One Turk was killed and two others wounded in a mine blast in southeastern Turkey on Thursday, an official statement said.

The statement issued by Sirnak governor's office said the blast took place at 14:00 local time (1400 GMT) when three shepherds stepped on the mine at Yemisli village in Uludere town in Sirnak province near north Iraq, leading to the tragedy.

The wounded were taken to Sirnak State Hospital for treatment, added the statement.

According to Turkish media, outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party ( PKK) had planted many mines in east and southeast Turkey.

Listed as a terrorist group by the United States, the UN and the European Union, the PKK had been seeking to set up a Kurdistan state in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast.

The PKK began to fight the Turkish state in 1978, and some 40, 000 people have been killed in the 30-year-old conflict.
