A famous US strategic analyst on September 23 criticized the Taiwan authority's "referendum" plan for UN membership.
"Sometimes the current leader of Taiwan has acted... for his own ambitions", Anthony H. Cordesman, from the US Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIC), said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.
"This is designed to provoke rather than to serve," he added.
The US expert is on visit to Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, from Sept. 20-22.
"I think that most people in Taiwan perhaps would support more cautious approach," he said.
He calls for more exchanges and visits across the Taiwan-Straight.
He cited two best ways, "one is to build up trade and investment and another is to make it as easy as possible for people from Taiwan to come to the mainland and for the Chinese in the mainland to go to Taiwan."
"It is to built up as much understanding and the strongest economic links as possible," said Cordesman.
