Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Thursday called on the whole society to take the opportunity of the Special Olympics to further improve the welfare of intellectually disabled people.
"We should mobilize all social forces to further improve the welfare of intellectually disabled and encourage them to go out and get involved into social life," said Hui at a meeting of the Organizing Committee of the Special Olympics.
"We should also encourage the spirit of Special Olympics and promote humanism and traditional Chinese merits across the country," Hui added.
The Special Olympics in Shanghai brought about excitement and joy to the disabled and made the guests feel the care of the Chinese government and people for the intellectually disabled, the vice premier said.
The ten-day 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games ended on Thursday.
The Special Olympics has achieved great success and won international acclaim, said Hui, adding that it is a great contribution China has made to the global drive of human rights protection.
