Senior Chinese official Li Changchun visited Luo Gengmo, a leading Marxist economist and honorary academician of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), on Tuesday at a Beijing-based hospital.
Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, extended his greetings to Luo on his 100th birthday.
Li asked all researchers in the field of philosophy and social sciences to learn from the economist and follow his path to further study of Marxism and the prosperous development of philosophy and social sciences.
Luo, a native of Linjiang in east China's Zhejiang Province, fought in China's Northern Expedition War (1926-1928), in 1927 and began to study economics in 1936 when he became an editor in Shanghai.
He became a research fellow at the Institute of Economics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1954. He has served as consultant for China's top think tanks, the CAS and the Economic Research Center of the State Council, since 1981.
The CAS started choosing academicians in 1955. Luo Gengmo was one of the first group of 233 academicians.
Originally part of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the CASS became independent on May 7, 1977.
