Fifty representatives from different sectors of the Hong Kong society won the candidacies for the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) on Sunday as the city prepares for electing 36 deputies to China's new-term top legislature.
The qualification of the 50 candidates was confirmed by the 15-member presidium of the Conference for Electing Deputies of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to the 11th NPC at its second session here Sunday, presidium spokesman Lee Cho Jat said at a press conference.
Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the NPC Standing Committee Sheng Huaren, who flew from Beijing to Hong Kong, attended the presidium session, which was presided by HKSAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang.
According to a bulletin released by the presidium, the 50candidates registered with at least 10 nominations from the total1,231 members of the electoral conference during the nomination period from Jan. 5 to Jan. 16.
According to relevant laws, Hong Kong residents of Chinese citizenship aged 18 or above are eligible to contest for the candidacy of the NPC deputies but they need to obtain at least 10nominations from the total 1,231 members of the electoral conference for their registrations to be effective.
The presidium also nominated candidates as ballot scrutineers for the election scheduled on Jan. 25 but their ballot scrutineers' candidacies are yet to be passed by the plenary session of the electoral conference on Friday. Source: Xinhua
