Nepali Minister for Information and Communication Kirshna Bahadur Mahara and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zheng Xianglin jointly inaugurated the opening ceremony of Kathmandu-Khasa Optical Fiber Laying Project here on Tuesday.

The 115-km long Single Mode Optical Cable will be laid along the Arniko Highway joining Kathmandu and Chinese border at Tatopani. The total cost of the project is estimated at some 25.4 million RMB (about 3.5 million U.S. dollars).

The Nepali minister expressed appreciation for the Chinese side for assisting Nepal in developing information technology.

He noted that the construction of the optical fiber cable would prove to be a milestone for the information and communication sector of Nepal.

For his part, ambassador Zheng said the construction of the project, also called information expressway, would be completed and put into service soon and would help Nepal to catch up with the trend of information digitization at an early date.
