Senior leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday asked local committees of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and governments to provide better services for retired cadres and a sound environment for the aged.
Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), made the call at a reception to celebrate the Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar new year, which falls on Feb. 7. More than 2,000 veteran cadres attended the reception held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi extended New Year's greetings to the participants and to retired Chinese leaders and veteran revolutionaries across the country.
Briefly reviewing the achievements China had made in the past year, Xi noted that the whole Party should seek unity, improve Party capability and vitality in a spirit of innovation.
He urged Party committees and governments at all levels to strengthen leadership to carry on the work concerning veterans, deal carefully with new issues, and take good care of them.
Local authorities must create favorable conditions for the elderly to be properly cared for, get necessary medical services and enjoy life, Xi said.
He also asked relevant authorities to resolve veterans' financial difficulties and alleviate their other problems, noting that special attention should be paid to retired leaders of state-owned enterprises that had undergone structural change or gone into bankruptcy.
He also expressed the hope that veterans could make new contributions to the construction of the country and the CPC.
