According to a survey by People's Daily Online, which drew more than 100, 000 participants, the following issues are the top concerns for NPC and CPPCC annual sessions.
1. Income distribution
An online survey indicated that among 65,000 participants, 84.33 percent feel dissatisfied with their current income; while only 15.67 percent of participants feel very satisfied or generally satisfied. The dissatisfaction mainly results from the unfair income induced by an industrial gap, regional gap and overpayment in some monopolized industries.
2. Price hikes
The global economic slump pushed up the consumer price index; and caused inflation in the prices of food and life necessities; and skyrocketing prices of oil, coal and gas. Over 51 percent of participants responded by calling this phenomenon "unbearable;" and 46.33 percent responded as feeling "tremendous pressure." Many participants hope the government will shift its attention to people's sustenance and livelihood.
3. Medical and health care
Polls show that 14.40 percent of participants feel generally satisfied with current medical reform; whereas 85.60 percent feel dissatisfied, feeling that the price of medical treatment is still too high.
Additionally, participants worry about being overcharged while receiving medical help. Preventive medical care and insurance systems are far from perfect; and a large gap in medical skills and technology exists between urban and rural areas.
4. Clean government and anti-corruption campaign
Nearly 88 percent of participants think it necessary to enhance the independence of anti-corruption institutions; and 90 percent believe it is critical to set up a reporting to release the properties and income of leaders and cadres.
Nearly 69 percent of participants believe that public assessment is an important index for leaders' performance; and 71.57 percent insist the leaders' performance assessment should be based on their achievements in resolving problems related to people's livelihood.
