Overseas Chinese in Russia, Portugal, Egypt and Malaysia have expressed their strong opposition to the Taiwan authorities' plan to hold a referendum for UN membership.

The Russian Association for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China said in a statement on Sunday in Moscow that the body is firmly against the attempted UN membership referendum by the Taiwan authorities.

The statement said the Taiwan authorities seek to change the status quo that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China.

The dangerous move will have a severe impact on the cross-Strait relations, undermine the fundamental interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and jeopardize the security across the strait and even that of the Asia-Pacific region, the statement said.

The complete reunification of China is in the fundamental interest of the Chinese nation and also the common aspiration of all the Chinese both at home and abroad, the statement said.

A day earlier, two Chinese chambers of commerce said in a joint statement that overseas Chinese in Russia will defend China's reunification and territorial integrity, and that they are resolved to safeguard China's prosperity and stability.

Cai Wenxian, chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Portugal, said in a colloquium in Lisbon that Chen Shui-bian's secessionist attempts would seriously damage cross-Strait relations and cause tremendous harm to the interests of the people in Taiwan.

He called on Taiwan compatriots to strengthen communication with the Chinese mainland, fight for the welfare of the Chinese people on both sides of the Strait and for the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation.

Zhan Liang, Chief of Puhuabao, the Chinese language newspaper in Portugal, said China's peaceful reunification is the common aspiration of all Chinese people. The Chen Shui-bian authorities' secessionist attempts will get nowhere and are doomed to fail, as they run counter to the Chinese nation's strong will to safeguard national unity, he said.

Wang Linghai, chairman of the Association of Overseas Chinese in Portugal, said in Porto that overseas Chinese are strongly opposed to the Taiwan authorities' secessionist attempts and their plan for a UN membership referendum. Overseas Chinese are ready to safeguard peace and unity of the Chinese nation, he said.

In Egypt, representatives of overseas Chinese held a colloquium on Saturday, condemning the attempted referendum by the Taiwan authorities.

On Friday, communities of overseas Chinese in Malaysia also expressed their strong opposition to the referendum attempt and called on Taiwan compatriots to boycott the referendum.
