President of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR) Stephen A. Orlins said Friday that the Chinese government has done a good job in dealing with the massive earthquake that hit Sichuan province last Monday.
"A disaster like this is very much a moral test of government," said Orlins. "The Chinese government is doing a very good job in dealing with the disaster relief."
In an interview with Xinhua, Orlins, who has headed the NCUSCR since May 2005, expressed condolences to all the people who had lost their friends, relatives, children and parents.
He said there has been a tremendous outpouring of sympathies and support for China.
"At the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations, our phones have been ringing constantly with people asking 'how can I donate to the relief effort,' 'how I can send things to the relief effort,'" Orlins said. "That's been really quite overwhelming."
"I think it's due in part to the tragedy and in part due to the way the Chinese government has handled this," he said. "The openness, the free media that has been allowed to report on the tragedy in Sichuan has allowed for this tremendous outpouring of support for China."
"China has never really had this kind of outpouring of support from people in America," Orlins said. "I attribute that to the government's decision in how they handle this tragedy."
"It's the way that this government, that (Chinese President) Hu Jintao and (Premier) Wen Jiabao, have handled this crisis by allowing the full reporting of the tragedy," he said.
"It shows the human side of China that often is missing from the Western media's reporting of China," he said. "The reporting is very sympathetic; it's very supportive of the Chinese government, very supportive of the Chinese people."
The NCUSCR, established in 1966, is one of the oldest American organizations dedicated to productive U.S.-China relations.
