A senior Chinese official urged the maintaining of stability in the earthquake-hit regions so as to create a favorable environment for the reconstruction.
Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited some of the regions worst hit by the May 12 quake in the southwestern Sichuan Province between Thursday and Monday. The visit took in Pengzhou, Wenchuan and Beichuan.
During his five-day tour, Zhou, also the secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee, consoled victims and visited with police, judges and law officers. He directed the latter to solve disputes and help maintain social stability.
He said a stable social environment was a prerequisite for successful quake relief work. He urged local governments to resume the normal work, production and life orders in the region while being engaged in relief work and economic development. This was to give the affected people confidence in rebuilding their lives.
Zhou urged a severe crackdown on all kinds of crimes to enhance the quake people's sense of security and timely solving disputes to promote social harmony.
The 8.0-magnitude quake rocked Sichuan and the neighboring regions. The death toll had risen to 69,142 and the number of injured 374,065 as of Monday noon.
