China's State Council, or the cabinet, on Saturday appointed Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

The decision to appoint Lau to replace Frederick Ma Si-hang was made based on related stipulations of the HKSAR Basic Law and a proposal by Donald Tsang, chief executive of HKSAR government, said a statement of the State Council.

Before his promotion, Lau was Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development.
