Wang Gang, a Communist Party of China (CPC) senior official, met in Beijing on Thursday afternoon with Yamasaki Taku, the former Japanese Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secretary-general.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said developing the Sino-Japanese friendship was in the fundamental interest of the two countries and two peoples, as well as to the peace, stability and prosperity of Asia and the world as a whole.

China would work with Japan to continue to expand the cooperation and exchanges in various fields, and promote a long-term sound and stable development of the bilateral relations, he said.

Wang, also Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said party-to-party exchanges had played an important role in enhancing mutual understanding and trust between the statesmen and peoples of the two countries.

He expressed hope that the two ruling parties would further expand the channel of high-level exchanges to promote development of the Sino-Japanese strategic and reciprocal partnership.

During the meeting, Wang also extended gratitude to the Japanese side for their support to China's earthquake relief and the Beijing Olympic Games.
