Chinese mainland and Taiwan have the common understanding to further cross-Strait communications, said a senior official with the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) after wrapping up his visit on the island.

"During the visit, what I felt most strongly is the friendliness and hospitality of Taiwan people. And I also realized that it was a common understanding in the island to widen communications and achieve peaceful development for cross-Strait relations," Wang Zaixi, ARATS vice chairman told reporters before leaving for the mainland.

During the 12-day visit to the island, Wang went to 15 cities and counties. "I never encountered anything unpleasant here. All the local people I met are very friendly, passionate and hospitable."

Wang said he was also impressed by the island's beautiful scenery such as Taroko, Sun Moon Lake, Ali Mountain, Yehliu among others.

As for residents' attitude to the island's access to mainland tourists and the weekend charter flights, he said, "from north to south, from cities to villages, I never heard any passive voices. And that boosted our confidence to carry on cross-Strait communications."

Wang arrived in Taipei on June 6, and then attended the 13th seminar on Chinese modernization, which was co-hosted by the ARATS and a Taiwan-based foundation of Chinese modernization.
