The Dalai Lama and his supporters should seriously carry out the promises made in July this year, if they really wanted to improve relations with the Chinese central government, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said here Tuesday at a regular press conference.

She was responding to a question concerning the Dalai Lama's declaration on Oct. 25 in which he said he intended to give up talks with the central government.

Jiang stressed the Chinese central government always adhered to consistent, explicit policies towards the Dalai Lama, and also adopted a sincere attitude in making contact with him.

"We hope by contacts with the central government, the Dalai Lama can recognize the existing situation, exert tangible sincerity and action, and do good to the Tibetan people in his lifetime," she said.

During a meeting with a central government representative in July this year, the Dalai Lama's representative agreed to the central government's requirements, namely, not to support activities to disturb the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games, not to support plots to fan violent criminal activities, not to support and concretely curb the violent terrorist activities of the pro-secession "Tibetan Youth Congress", and not to support any argument and activity to seek "Tibetan independence" and split the region from the country.

Jiang said the central government needed to not only listen to what the Dalai Lama said but also observe what he did.

The details of the next possible round of contact were still under negotiation, she added.
