Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks at a musical performance of "Farewell, My Concubine" by Shanghai City Dance Ltd. (SCD) on Friday evening.

The SCD had made positive progress in creating traditional Chinese shows that catered to the global audience since its founding amid nationwide reform of performance and management system in arts troupes.

"Farewell, My Concubine" originates from the ancient story of Xiang Yu (232-201 B.C.), who battled for the unification of China with Liu Bang, the eventual founder of the Han Dynasty,

The show combines folk and modern dance to tell the love story of Xiang Yu and his favorite concubine, Yu Ji.

"Farewell, My Concubine" was warmly reviewed when it was staged at the Theater des Champs Elysees in 2004. A successful tour of Japan followed.
