Police in Tibet confirmed on Tuesday that a bus accident, which killed 18 people and injured 29 others, was caused by a fracture in the steel bracket connecting the front wheels.

The bus, with 46 passengers and a driver onboard, ran off the road and plunged into a valley, about 90 meters deep on Friday. It was on its way from Pachen County to Nagqu Town, capital of Nagqu Prefecture.

Besides the fracture, Tan Yongsou, the prefectural commissioner, said the bus was over capacity and that also played a role in the accident. It was meant to hold only 36 passengers.

The victims, including a baby, have been identified. Seventeen lived in Tibet. The other person was from the neighboring Sichuan Province.

Authorities have established contacts with their families.

Of the 29 injured, all are in stable condition except two children who suffered head injuries, said a doctor named Pengtao with Tibet No. 2 People's Hospital in Lhasa.

Two people were released from hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The bus belonged to Fada Transportation Company in the prefecture.

Nagqu Prefecture is more than 400 kilometers north of Lhasa.
