China has sent 30 police liaison officers to 19 countries over the past decade to help combat transnational crimes and safeguard national security, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement on Monday.
The officers were stationed at embassies including those in Thailand, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan. The first officer was sent to the United States in May 1998, the ministry said.
The officers helped other law enforcement agencies deal with major cases. They also helped arrest and repatriate suspects.
From 2005 to 2007, more than 60 suspects were arrested and repatriated with the aid of these overseas officers, the statement said.
The officers had also helped protect Chinese citizens and institutions abroad. The ministry cited kidnapping cases in South Africa in 2007, in which all Chinese hostages were safely released thanks to the efforts of Chinese and South Africa police forces.
The liaison officers also monitored emerging threats and strengthened anti-terrorism cooperation, it said. Source:Xinhua
