Communist Party of China (CPC) senior official Zhou Yongkang Thursday morning broke ground for a project to rebuild the Xianggui (Hunan Province-Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region) railway.

Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, arrived in Guangxi Wednesday to attend celebrations marking the 50th founding anniversary of the region.

Officials said the project was a key part of China's medium and long-term plan of railway network construction. Building of the project was expected to effectively motivate the resources development and industrialization and urbanization of areas along the railway, and help with the poverty reduction and economic progress.

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, gateway to southeast Asia, was founded on Dec. 11, 1958. As one of China's five ethnic minority autonomous regions, it has 12 ethnic groups.
