President Hu Jintao and his predecessor Jiang Zemin mourned the recent death of Chen Heqiao, former political commissar of the Second Artillery Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).
Chen died of illness in Beijing on December 21, 2008, at the age of 94.
Li Yuanchao, Xu Caihou, Liu Huaqing, and Liang Guanglie are also among mourners of the former political leader of the country's strategic army.
According to official sources, Chen joined the Chinese Communist Youth League (CCYL) in 1931, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants Red Army in 1932, and the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1934.
Chen held a number of positions in the CPC-led armed forces, including deputy political commissar of the PLA Kunming Military Area Command and political commissar of the Telecommunications Department of the Central Military Commission (CMC).
In 1955, he became a Major General of the PLA.
Chen was member of the 11th CMC, deputy to the 11th and 12th CPC Congresses, member of the Standing Committee of the 7th National People's Congress (NPC), and member of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the 7th NPC.
