Chinese in the United States, Russia and Norway on Friday and Saturday discussed Chinese President Hu Jintao's proposals on promoting the peaceful development of the relations across the Taiwan Straits, and responded favorably to the six points he raised in his address.
Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong said that President Hu's talk on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the mainland's "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" complies with the tides of the times and historical trends, and well grasps the fundamental interests of the nation.
It has won the high regard of the international community, including the U.S., and the warm welcome of the people in Taiwan and overseas Chinese.
Huang Jieping, a Taiwan compatriot who heads the Chinese-language channel "Today World" in Washington D.C., said Hu's six proposals has laid a solid foundation and pointed a clear direction for the future development of the cross-Straits relations, and is conducive to the final peaceful reunification of the homeland.
Pan Lingrong, chairman of the Taiwanese Sodality, said President Hu's address has fully demonstrated the Chinese government's sincerity to the Taiwanese people.
Other leaders of Chinese Communities in the U.S. capital expressed willingness to respond to President Hu's calls by implementing the content of Hu's speech, furthering the understanding and communication between the mainland and Taiwanese communities, and uniting overseas Chinese to contribute to the national peaceful reunification of the motherland.
Chinese Consul General in New York Peng Keyu said Hu's speech is a strategic document that contains guiding principles for the handling of the cross-Straits relations at a time when they face a historic opportunity after a significant positive change in the political situation in Taiwan.
Xiong Jie, professor at the New York University, said the new thinking in Hu's proposals has placed the cross-Straits relations in a new framework, within which the relations are expected to achieve substantial breakthroughs in the future.
Xie Gang, chairman of the joint ethnic Chinese communities, said Hu's proposals will exert significant influence on the national peaceful reunification and the revival of the Chinese people. He called on overseas Chinese to enhance communication, especially between mainland Chinese and the Taiwan compatriots, to promote understanding between the two groups.
Chinese communities in Russia held a seminar on Friday to discuss Hu's proposals. They expressed the hope that China would be reunited completely one day, believing this suits the fundamental interests of the Chinese people.
They said they were willing to join hands to help protect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and contribute to the nation's peaceful reunification and rejuvenation of the Chinese people.
The Chinese communities and students in Norway thought Hu's proposals sent a strong message of peaceful development, mutual prosperity, reconciliation and harmony across the Taiwan Straits, and showed the Chinese government's sincerity and determination to make the greatest efforts to pursue national peaceful reunification, and to serve the best interests for people across the Straits.
They expressed their willingness to serve as a bridge for more frequent communication and cooperation between the two sides.
