The mainland and Taiwan should enhance exchanges to improve military mutual trust, said Xu Genchu, a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature.

"The exchanges on military mutual trust, which have drawn wide attention across the Strait, will also boost cooperation in other areas," said Xu, former vice-president of the Academy of Military Sciences, on the sideline of the ongoing NPC annual session.

Retired high-ranking officers, experts and scholars on the mainland have been to Taiwan twice for the exchanges. "They said the exchanges were satisfactory," said Xu.

The lawmaker said such exchanges would continue and be enhanced, "which is not only the hope of the army, but also the common wish of people on both sides of the Strait."
