Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang on Friday urged judicial authorities to listen to people's complaints and safeguard social fairness and justice.

He made the call when deliberating the work reports of the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate with deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) from Chongqing Municipality.

Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said judicial authorities should improve their work to provide judicial support for accelerating the transformation of economic growth pattern as well as for maintaining social harmony and stability.

He said judicial authorities should properly handle legal disputes arising from industrial restructuring, transformation of growth pattern and expanding domestic demand, and crack down on illegal activities in accordance with law.

Noting that the majority of the judiciary staff have made great contributions to development and stability, he called for intensified efforts to punish the corrupt and improve the judicial work by taking advices and suggestions made by lawmakers and political advisors.

Zhou also hailed Chongqing's gang crackdown launched in 2009.
