A veteran of China's Red Army Wednesday urged Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) to better carry forward the fine traditions and styles of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Zhang Zhixiu, the former Commander of the Kunming Military Area and a veteran of Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, made the remarks at the meeting to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the PLA and to honor the heroes and model servicemen of the PLA.

Zhang, a hero, survived several key wars in Chinese history, including the China's War of Liberation, War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

He recalled his days serving in China's armed forces and cherished the memory of older generation of proletarian revolutionaries who founded our Party and Army, and martyrs and comrades-in-arms who fought bravely, shed blood or even laid down their lives for the independence and liberation of the Chinese nation.

"The PLA owes its tremendous achievements to the strong leadership of the CPC, vigorous support of the people and the sacrifice made by numerous revolutionary martyrs, as well as the fine traditions of following the command of the Party, serving the people and being courageous and skillful in battle that the officers and servicemen have carried forward," he said.

He encourage the PLA to make further contribution to the building of Chinese socialism.

"We must keep the political spirit of a Party member and revolutionary serviceman forever to make fresh contribution to building China into a moderately prosperous society in all respects and ushering in a new era for the building of Chinese socialism."

Also at the meeting, a civilian representative of the meeting, Zhao Fengtong, vice mayor of Beijing, is invited to deliver a speech. Zhao praised servicemen's efforts in serving people.

Over the past eight decades, the PLA has exerted its own advantage in helping to advance economic and social development, promote moral and ethical behavior, uphold social stability and carry out major disaster-relief operations, said Zhao.

He promise local governments will also support development of the armed forces. "We will contribute our share to facilitating the modernization of national defense and the armed forces by bolstering military-civilian unity and providing solid backing for the armed forces," he said.

"It is our responsibility and mission to build up national defense through cooperation between the army, the government and the people," said Zhao.
