China's Zhoushan missile destroyer
Accompanied by China's Zhoushan missile destroyer two ships from the Cayman Islands in northwestern Caribbean safely passed through the Gulf of Aden in Somali waters on Saturday. It is the first time the Chinese navy has engaged in convoy activities to safeguard western ships.
One of the ships, Erics, was headed for Oman; the other, Pulatim, for Dubai. Each ship, with a maximum displacement of 498 tons, carried eight people.
During the journey, the Chinese navy regularly contacted the two ships and regularly used its helicopter air patrol force.
The Chinese naval convoy enjoys high prestige in the Gulf of Aden for having accomplished many large-scale convoy missions and ensuring a 100 percent safety record to date.
