Incentives to join

If recruited, every student-turned-soldier will receive a one-off refund of up to 24,000 yuan ($3,500) as compensation for college tuition fees or student loans.

They will have a better chance of getting promoted or receiving education at military academies. After finishing the two-year compulsory service, they are promised preference while seeking jobs at police and other law-enforcement departments.

Chinese soldiers have also enjoyed several rounds of pay rises since the 1980s, an incentive that is also helpful to encourage young people to sign up, according to researchers.

Hu Zhiliang, an Air Force captain who has been serving in Qingdao for 3 years after graduating from a military university, told the Global Times that his salary is more than 4,000 yuan a month, moderately higher than the average among college graduates.

There are other benefits that can be useful for a person's future career.
Guo Chuanjun, a geography teacher now at Fengcheng Middle School in Laiwu city, Shandong Province, joined the Navy in his junior year in 2004 at Shandong Normal University, and he came back to finish his degree after two years of service.

"During my service in the Navy, I joined the Communist Party of China, and I was classed as an excellent student after I returned to my campus," he said.
Officials said encouraging young people to join the Army also represents a strategy to ease the tight employment market.

China had nearly 5.6 million university graduates in 2008, and only two- thirds of them found a job, according to China News Service. This year, the number of new graduates is expected to top 6 million.

Stricter access to boot camp

Qualified young people will go to designated hospitals for checkups in 18 districts and counties around Beijing.

The physical examinations are more complex than ever, with extra procedures such as a B-type ultrasound check of the abdomen, which takes 20 minutes more than the previous 70-minute total physical check.

Wang Hongbing, the dean of the hospital, said there are two changes during this year's physical examination.

"One is that it is much more complex, the other is an increase in the level of difficulty in psychological tests, which include math, Chinese and writing expressions.

Organizations at all levels have intensified their efforts to prevent corruption.
According to a report published Monday by the military newspaper PLA Daily, the military authority asked all military officials not to use their power to interfere in the draft process.

Many Web users disclosed that employees at some Conscription Offices will receive 50,000 yuan in commission for a woman applicant and 100,000 yuan for a man during the recruitment campaign.

A recruiter in Xunxian, Hubei Province, was indicted earlier this year for taking 55,000 yuan of bribes from 20 young men, according to a report on jcrb.com, the official site of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
