"China is developing a high-thrust rocket, Long March 5, which is expected to deliver moon vehicles, large satellites and space stations after 2014," said the vice president and secretary of the Party committee of the China Institute of Carrier Rocket Technology, senior engineer Liang Xiaohong, on the 10th during an interview.
Representative Liang Xiaohong said that a demo of China's high-thrust rocket was started in 1986; and in 2007, the high-thrust rocket was approved as one of the 16 major scientific and technological developments by the central government.
He said that the new rocket manufacturing base at Tianjin Binhai is built for the production of 12 high-thrust rockets; and it will meet the demands of future domestic and international satellite launching markets. The new high-thrust rocket's core diameter is five meters which makes it difficult to transport by rail or road to the Satellite Launch Center in Xichang, Jiuquan or Taiyuan. Long March 5 will be transported by sea via a special ship to the newly built satellite launch center located in Wenchang, Hainan province.
