'Digital Dunhuang', a program that will help protect Dunhuang Grottoes, is being developed by the Institute of Computing Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University and Zhejiang University, Professor Li Deren of Wuhan University unveiled recently.
The program is expected to be completed in 10 to 20 years.
Li said natural and human factors constantly threaten the Mogao Grottoes' preservation and the "Digital Dunhuang" program will avoid this.
The "Digital Dunhuang" will allow tourists to admire the exquisite murals and colored sculptures without having to actually enter the caves.
The "Digital Dunhuang" consists of three parts - virtual reality, augmented reality and interactive reality.
Professor Li is responsible for virtual reality section involving design, planning, management and implementation.
The project team he leads has started using surveying, mapping and remote-sensing technology to present on computers virtual images in millimeter precision of all the cultural relics, including the external shapes of the Mogao Grottoes and the interior sculptures.
The National Development and Reform Commission approved an investment of 261 million yuan for the conservation and usage of the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang. Among the various programs, the 'Digital Dunhuang' program which received most of the investment funds attracts the most attention.
