According to a press release from the Information Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government on November 12, the iObservatory, established by the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department and managed by the Hong Kong Space Museum, was recently completed and will be put into operation soon.
The facility allows users to take astrophotographs remotely with its professional telescope using the Internet.
The iObservatory is located in the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village, Sai Kung of Hong Kong. It is housed in a three-story building and costs HK $7.3 million. The iObservatory contains a 60cm Cassegrain telescope inside a dome on the roof and is the largest professional telescope in Hong Kong.
Under ideal sky conditions, telescope users can observe celestial objects 4,000 times dimmer than those barely visible to the naked eye. A professional 11 million pixel astronomical CCD camera is attached to the telescope so users can take astrophotographs remotely by using the Internet.
