Before driving, drivers would need to place their middle finger into a detector beneath the steering wheel. The system will automatically analyze the fingerprint and sweat, and if the alcohol level exceeds the limit they will not be able to start the vehicle.
The first system using fingerprint tests to stop drunk driving has been developed by two college undergraduate students and made its debut on November 25 at the Third China International Road Safety Products Expo held in Beijing.
After installing the system, the detection of alcohol levels in the driver’s sweat would be connected with the vehicle’s ignition. When the middle finger is placed into the enclosed detection device, it will analyze within 20 seconds whether the alcohol level in the driver’s finger sweat exceeds the limit. If it does, then the ignition or electronic fuel injection circuit will not start, preventing the vehicle from moving.
Statistics show that every year there are over 250,000 traffic accidents caused by drunk driving in China, which has resulted in approximately 50,000 deaths and a direct economic loss of nearly 1.3 billion yuan.
