China's first Mars probe will be launched in October next year, Chen Changya, deputy chief designer of the China-Russia Joint Martian Exploration Project confirmed to reporters yesterday . It will take pictures of Mars and Phobos, one of the Martian moons.

According to the cooperation agreement between China and Russia, China’s Yinghuo-1 and Russia’s Phobos-Grunt probes will fly to Mars together onboard a Russian carrier rocket. The two explorers will fly together for 11 months, and will carry out separate missions upon reaching the Martian orbit. During the flight to Mars, the two satellites will be connected by cables and Phobos-Grunt will supply the energy for Yinghuo-1.
