News from Beihang University (Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics) confirms that the flight of a space rocket propelled by a hybrid rocket motor, code-named "Beihang No. 2", has recently tested successfully at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.
The rocket was designed and developed by 15 students from the School of Astronautics at the university.
A hybrid rocket motor combines the advantages of a traditional solid motor and a liquid motor. It is adjustable, cost-effective, and environmental-friendly. The design of this type of rocket motor still remains a worldwide technical difficulty that has not been completely overcome.
The design, manufacturing, assembly and transportation of "Beihang No. 2" were overseen entirely by students, most of whom began research for the project in their senior years of college. After over two years of hard work and multiple tests, the rocket they independently developed was finally launched successfully.
